August 27th: Grindstone Island

Grindstone Island is the fourth largest of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River and the second largest of the American islands in the St. Lawrence. The island lies near Lake Ontario and is part of the United States of America. In particular, the island is part of the Town of Clayton in Jefferson County, New York.

We feel like we are heaven. Does it get better than this? Dans Uncle John and Aunt Fran Mallory invited us to their house on this island. They picked us up on their boat and whisked us away to their magical cottage. We went swimming right off. The water was surprisingly warm, the sun was out, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. We basked in the sun afterwards on some massively flat rocks, ate fig newtons and drank beer. As you would imagine there is a tight community here and so we met up with their friends for wine to watch the sun set. What a dream of a day.

  1. I love that it is called Grindstone Island, when it is the complete opposite of “keeping one’s nose to the grindstone”. So happy for you
